Font Design 1 introduces students to the art and discipline of typeface creation through both classical and experimental approaches to letterform design, using professional software. Students will explore the anatomy, structure, and proportion of individual characters while developing a cohesive and functional alphabet, and ultimately, a working font file. Emphasis is placed on understanding how forms relate within a system to create rhythm, balance, and consistency across a typeface. Conceptual and practical considerations such as usability, application, and context guide the development process, preparing students to approach font design as a tool for communication as well as creative expression.
