Building on Font Design 1, students in Font Design 2 will deepen their knowledge of Glyphs software to understand and apply the technical aspects necessary for developing marketable fonts. Students may approach the class in one of two ways: The first option is to further develop their Font Design 1 typeface-building a font family with multiple weights and completing the necessary character sets for retail/professional use. The second option is a conceptual approach: creating contextual/responsive fonts using OTF feature scripting or other tech platforms, with a focus on specific effects. In this option, students will build out character sets to support the desired effect while employing feature scripting for a seamless user experience.
Both approaches will result in a documented process, a final presentation, and potential consideration for retail development or proposal to a foundry.
