Instructional Method
Academic Level
In Urban Ecosystems in LA, we will learn about novel ecosystems and microhabitats as well as habitat fragmentation and the wildland-urban interface (WUI), concepts central to understanding how organisms interact within the urban environment. The instructor will share how nature-based solutions in urban settings can address biodiversity loss, water and soil health, and human community resilience. Learning activities will include visits with ecologists, designers, and artists to learn about ecological initiatives including wildlife monitoring efforts, soil reclamation projects, and indigenized environmental justice programs. For assignments, students will demonstrate learning with drawing, diagramming, and illustrating. Class includes site visits and field work at model habitats, green infrastructure, and community projects in the Los Angeles and Pasadena area.
