GPRT-308: Archetype Press

In Archetype Press, students gain hands-on experience in letterpress printing using both metal and wood type. Students also work with mixing ink, understanding color and typesetting in an analog space. Archetype Press has been an integral part of ArtCenter's design and typography curriculum for over 30 years. The press offers students a rare opportunity to set type and print by hand. With a collection of more than 2,500 cases of American and European foundry type, wood type, and ornaments-collected from the renowned Los Angeles typographer and printer Vernon Simpson-the press functions as a living archive.
