SXD-310A: Topic Studio: Sustainability

Credits 3
Instructional Method
Academic Level
This topic studio challenges students to critically examine and redesign products, environments, and processes to achieve meaningful sustainability outcomes. Moving beyond a "less harm" approach, students investigate how design can create positive ecological and social impact, meeting present needs without compromising future generations. Through research, analysis, and field engagement, students explore strategies such as circular material systems, up-cycling, elimination of waste, and reduction of ecological footprint. Emphasis is placed on integrating contextual and cultural research, applying materials and fabrication knowledge, and using systems thinking to propose innovative, buildable solutions. By the end of the course, students articulate sustainable design narratives with clarity and support them through drawings, models, and professional presentations.
