In this course, students from diverse design disciplines will collaborate to create innovative systems to address the complex needs of communities affected by natural disasters in Southern California. With wildfires increasingly devastating areas like the Pacific Palisades, Eaton Canyon, and Altadena, combined with the persistent threat of earthquakes, the studio will focus on developing sustainable, portable, and resilient designs for home, emergency shelter, healthcare, and mobility. The design solutions will prioritize not only fire and seismic resilience but also health and well-being, addressing both physical and mental health needs. Students will explore how to create spaces and experiences that support recovery and dignity, fostering safety, stability, and psychological well-being during and after disasters.
